Frequently Asked Questions & Resources

  • What is the difference between “home care” and “home health care”?

Home care is non-medical in nature. It can consist of light housekeeping, meal prep, bathing, dressing, and medication reminders. At Traditions, these are typically performed by a caregiver with a Home Health Aid (HHA) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.

“Home health care” can include medical needs that are ongoing after a visiting nurse (VNA) is no longer in the home or due to chronic and long-term medical conditions.

  • What is the difference between “home health care” and a visiting nurse association (VNA)?

A visiting nurse association or VNA is typically assigned by a doctor’s orders after an office visit, or a hospital or rehabilitation stay when skilled medical care is necessary at home. They are shorter visits to address those specific medical needs and are covered by health insurance for a specific time period. “Home health care” can include medical needs, particularly those that might still need attention when a visiting nurse is no longer coming to the home. Traditions is not a VNA however we can provide medical care through our Private Nursing Care performed by Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) or Registered Nurses (RN) for tasks such as: wound care, Diabetes care, medication and insulin administration, pain and symptom management, tube feedings, ventilator care and more.

  • Can you provide care in Assisted Living Facilities or Skilled Nursing Facilities?

Yes, we provide care to wherever your loved one calls home. We can supplement care provided in Assisted Living Residences or Skilled Nursing Facilities to help your loved one age in place, should they need additional hours of service.

  • Are you covered by Mass Health, Medicare or Medicaid?

Traditions does not accept payments directly from these, but you can submit costs for services to them and they may pay something to reimburse you. You should inquire with these organizations for specific coverage questions.

  • What is a Geriatric Care Manager?

A Geriatric Care Manager is a certified professional who can assess your needs, come up with a plan, and help you navigate the ins and outs of elder care including finances, legal, medical and psycho-social aspects of care. They can recommend home care such as Traditions, or a senior residence or nursing facility. They can also manage all of these services for you for a fee.

  • Where do your caregivers come from?

We have access to hundreds of caregivers with various skill levels. We have interviewed, trained and nationally background checked all of them. They are a league of nations, but we require all to speak and understand English clearly. Our caregivers are also required to have computer skills to use the technology required to do their job to our high standards.

  • Are your caregivers bonded and insured?

Yes, our caregivers are bonded and insured, and employed through Traditions Home Health Services.

  • Are your caregivers background checked?

Yes, our caregivers are background checked. We do a National background check to make sure there are no issues in states outside of and including Massachusetts.

  • I am already working with a hospice care organization, why would I need home care services?

Though hospice organizations provide amazing care at end of life, they are typically limited to being with a patient once or twice per day at best. Traditions can be there to work WITH and supplement the services your hospice organization provides to support you in those in-between times. Learn more about our Hospice Care.

  • What do Health, safety, and joy mean to seniors?

For seniors, health means being able to live life to the fullest and safety means feeling protected from harm. Joy means having a sense of happiness and satisfaction in life. Together, these three things make up a happy and fulfilling life.

Health is key for seniors because it allows them to do the things they love. If they’re not healthy, then they can’t participate in activities or go on trips with friends. Good health also allows seniors to be more independent, which is important to many people as they age.

Safety is also important for seniors. They may need help with things like cooking or cleaning, but they still want to feel safe in their own homes. Having railings in the home, using a walker or cane, and having a friend or family member check in on them regularly can help seniors feel safe.

Joy is the cherry on top for seniors. It’s what makes life worth living, even when things get tough. For some people, it comes from spending time with family and friends. For others, it might be from traveling or learning new things. No matter what it is, joy is an important part of life.

All three of these things – health, safety, and joy – are important for seniors. By keeping these things in mind, we can help make our loved ones’ lives happier and more fulfilling.

  • What is the difference between a licensed nurse and a certified home health care aide?

The main difference between a licensed nurse and a certified home health care aide is that nurses have more training. They’re able to do things like give medication and change dressings, while aides can only do basic tasks like feeding and bathing. Nurses also typically make more money than aides.

However, both nurses and aides are important in caring for seniors. Aides help keep them comfortable and safe, while nurses provide crucial medical care. By having both types of caregivers in the home, families can be assured that their loved ones are getting the best possible care.
