Creative Ways to Overcome the Communication Challenges of Alzheimer’s

When Alzheimer’s changes a loved one’s cognitive functioning, the familiar comfort of conversation may begin to fade. What was once easy can feel strained, and silence may start to replace shared stories. Yet in spite of the communication challenges of Alzheimer’s, deep and meaningful connection remains possible. Here’s how.
Speak From the Heart
Instead of asking for recollection, make emotional observations. “This song always reminds me of our Sunday mornings together” is more likely to stir a memory or emotion than “Do you remember what we did last Sunday?” Emotional cues reduce pressure and increase engagement.
Avoid Correcting—Redirect Instead
It’s natural to want to keep conversations accurate, but correcting someone with dementia can lead to frustration. Try responding with empathy. If they say something like, “I need to call my dad,” you can say, “He was such a kind man. You must have really looked up to him.” Then gently redirect to another topic.
Use Activities as Conversation
Conversation can come from doing something together. Washing dishes, planting flowers, or flipping through a favorite book can spark organic, low-pressure dialogue—or simply provide quiet companionship.
Keep a Sense of Humor
Even if memories fade, the ability to laugh usually doesn’t. Share something silly. Watch a funny video. Let the natural absurdities of life create a shared giggle. Humor makes difficult days a little easier and helps maintain emotional closeness.
It’s Okay to Ask for Help
When you feel like you’re shouldering the emotional and communication load on your own, know that support is available. A skilled caregiver can give you both space—to rest, to recharge, and to reconnect more easily.
